Have you heard of ThumbTack? Its an online service that bills itself as “A new way to hire local services.” Users can request a service (housecleaning, dog-walking, etc) as well as their zip code and from there submit their needs. Local companies who have registered are notified about the opportunity and have an opportunity to bid on the opportunity. For example, I went in and typed “Lawn-mowing” as well as my local zip code and received this message on the next page:

I don’t actually need lawn-cutting service at this time so I’ll stop the experiment here – but the service looks intriguing. We went ahead and completed a profile for Kaufer DMC to see if it generates any local inquiries. We’ll be sure to let you know about any success stories!
