If your company is involved with multiple social media platforms (think Facebook, Twitter), but it’s not on Pinterest, it might be time to seriously consider changing that.
Simply put, Pinterest is booming. As of February, the the social media giant had 79.3 million unique visitors (almost double what it had a year earlier) and was recently valued at $11 billion following it’s most recent round of funding.
Despite it’s obvious potential and growing popularity, I’ll admit that as recently as last year I regrettably considered Pinterest a more female-centric version of StumbleUpon (stupid and ignorant, I know). Then I signed up for it and started Pinning away, and boy was I wrong. Pinterest is growing it’s audience, has interesting content for everyone, and while the majority of Pinterest users are women, it’s growing more quickly among men (62 percent for men versus 42 percent for women). It was also recently suggested that Pinterest is the new Google.
Now back to my original point. If you’re not involved with Pinterest on a brand level, get involved. To motivate you a bit more, it’s important to understand that according to Dispatch there are now more than 50 billion “pins” on Pinterest and one billion boards have been created. Of that content, about two-thirds of it is created by brands. So if your brand isn’t hitting that enormous market, it’s highly likely that your competitor is.
You might be asking yourself, “what if my brand is already on Pinterest and I simply want to gain more followers?” Well, we’ve got you covered. Here are 10 ways to gain more followers on Pinterest.
1. Pin a lot
This is the simplest and most effective way to gain more followers. The more you pin, the more likely it will be for other users to see your pins. Make sure you’re Pinning useful content that is relevant to your brand and not just anything and everything. Remember, with more than 50 billion pins on Pinterest, there is plenty of content to go around.
2. Post original content
While it’s essential to pin other Pinterest user’s content, make sure you’re posting original content yourself. Does your company have a blog? Create a Pinterest blog board and pin all of your blog posts when you post them. Does your company create interesting visual content like original images or infographics? Pin those as well. 3. Repin, comment, and like posts
Repining, commenting, and liking other Pinner’s posts will gain you more followers because you’re engaging with other active Pinterest users. If you’re engaging with other users, it will most likely lead them to notice you and reciprocate your engagement.
4. Follow users and boards
Similar to Twitter and Instagram, the more users and boards you follow on Pinterest, the more likely your brand is to gain followers in return. Many social media users pride themselves on following other users back, and Pinterest is no exception. Follow brands and companies (and even competitors) that align with your own focus and watch them closely as they’re likely to follow back. Also, if other users start following you that you haven’t previously followed, follow them back!
5. Spread your Pinterest activity to other social networks (Facebook, Twitter)
Publishing your Pinterest activity to other social networks (most notably Facebook and Twitter) is a great way to gain new followers. By tapping the millions of users on Twitter, and the billions on Facebook, you’re spreading your audience reach that much more, in turn increasing the chances that you’ll gain more followers on Pinterest. There’s multiple ways to do this, such as simply posting a “Follow us on Pinterest” status update on your company Facebook page, or when you Pin something new, check the box in the lower lefthand corner that allows to post your pins to Twitter.
6. Add a Pinterest follow button to your website or blog
If you’re on social media at all, these types of follow buttons are must-haves on your company website. Whether it’s Facebook, Twitter, or Pinterest, you need to have social icon call-to-action follow buttons located on your website. This will allow you to gain followers from anyone who visits your website, expanding your audience reach beyond just the social network itself. It’s a good idea to post these in multiple places on your website, such as your blog posts or even within your downloadable long-form content (like an eBook or whitepaper, if you have such collateral).
7. Add a Pinterest follow button to your email signature
It’s no secret that we all send and receive a lot of emails every day. According to sourcedigit.com, “by 2017, the number of emails sent/received per day will be around 206.6 billion emails with a growth of 3% from 2013 figure- 182.9 billion emails sent and received per day worldwide.” That’s a lot of emails. Because of this, it’s a good idea to place a Pinterest follow button below your email signature so that anyone you’re corresponding with through email will have an easy opportunity to follow your Pinterest account. And remember, make sure to follow them back!
8. Share lots of images
Images are one of the most compelling pieces of content on the web. Everyone loves a good image, which is why social media applications like Instagram and Afterlight are extremely popular and growing rapidly. Pinterest is no exception. If you take a quick minute to browse through your Pinterest feed, all of the best Pinterest pins have compelling images attached to them. Many Pinterest pins are driven simply by an image. These images can be standalone pins or they can link to additional content. Someone browsing your Pinterest will be much more eager to click on one of your pins, comment, like, or repin it if there is a compelling image driving the post.
9. Mention other Pinterest users
Mentioning other Pinterest users in your Pinterest activity, whether it’s commenting on a pin, pinning something new, or repining a pin is a great way to gain new followers. Try to do this whenever possible. This will increase your visibility among other active Pinterest users, get you noticed, and you’ll be able to form closer social media relationships with other Pinterest users. All of this should result in more followers.
10. Promote you pins
Advertising on Pinterest is another strong way to gain more followers. This will cost money, but setting aside a small budget ($100 a month) can go a long way in social media advertising. This will surely gain your business page more followers, and since you’re spending money on advertising, you can target exactly the type of followers you want to gain by promoting specific pins.
